A License To Steal

4/30/2008

Vinny Vella's new Pizzeria on Metropolitan Avenue in Brooklyn is evolving from a hang out for actors from mob movies to a sort-of cafe for book readings by former bad guys turned literary.

Infamous cat burglar Walter Shaw will be the first to read excerpts from his tell-all memoir, A License to Steal on Tuesday, May 13th at Noon. He will be joined by Vinny Vella, proprietor and actor famous for his memorable roles in Casino, The Sopranos, Analyze That and others.

During readings and book signings, Shaw's back will be protected by a chorus of Sopranos who admire the author's desire to give his inventive father is rightful due. Shaw's father's patents on telecommunications breakthroughs such as call forwarding, conference calling and touch-tone dialing were stolen by persons whom the author regards as nothing more than white-collar criminals running fat corporations.

"While I'm not proud of it today, I made people who could afford it pay for my dad's inventions with their jewels," says author Shaw. "In my book I describe the only currency in which I was trading at the time as I watched my poor sick dad robbed blind by big corporations now reaping undeserved profits from what were his patented inventions.

"In a way I was seeking not just fast money and revenge, but a weird form of justice, for which I paid the price in the form of a long prison stretch. Now I want the world to know the full story of why I gave myself . . . 'a license to steal.'"

Shaw said he's grateful to his pal Vella for providing the perfect platform to talk about his book. "At Vinny's place, I expect a have a sit-down meet with all the little guys who've been ripped off and suckered in by big business, including those now on the verge of losing their homes because of corporate America's greed.

"If people think mobsters are bad, they should look at today's big corporations who believe they have a license to steal jobs from Americans and shove them overseas," Shaw said.
